Low tide turns a harbor into a yard. Hulls lean on one another the way chairs do after a long meal. Someone will come back when the water returns, and until then the boats are just wood, paint, and patience. I have never learned the names of these boats. I only know the feeling of waiting for a thing you cannot hurry.

People are at work in this photograph, on the shore at Stone Town. Adam Jones made the picture and released it under a Creative Commons license. They did not pose for this page. Please don't invent names or private lives for them. An imagined story can stay with the boats, the light, and what the scene stirs in you.
