Kilimanjaro makes its own weather and then hides in it. The snow looks close enough to trust and far enough to correct you. Acacias stand in the foreground like a scale the mountain did not ask for. I think of all the people who looked up and changed their plans, and all the people who live with the mountain as a daily fact, not a metaphor.

There is a smaller peak to the left, Mawenzi, sharper and less famous. I like that the photograph includes it. Not every story in a view is the one with the name everyone already knows.
